President's Message

Thirty-one of our nearly 100 members have earned the APR designation.
Under the guidance of Accreditation Chair Jim Cartmell, APR, our
chapter has offered preparation and testing two times each year and
continues to have an APR candidate pass rate that's higher than the
national average.

At our recent Board of Directors meeting, Jim outlined proposed
changes to our accreditation preparation sessions. The modifications
were made to address feedback from previous APR exam participants and
to reflect planned changes in the APR examination.

The review process will include two study sessions and a mock oral
and written exam. In addition, there will be a greater emphasis on
teamwork among APR candidates with the expectation that pairs of
candidates will meet at least two times outside of the review
sessions. APR Mentors will receive training that will add value to
their role. An Accreditation Committee co-chair will assist with
candidate follow-up to assure they are "tracking" to the
study/preparation plan.

Study sessions for the upcoming Fall exam will be held July 15 and
29, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Topics covered will include: Research and
Measurement, Theoretical Basis for Public Relations; Legal Aspects of
Public Relations, the PRSA Code of Ethics; and the Four Step Process
for Public Relations Planning. A separate session on August 12 will
provide candidates with an opportunity to take a mock oral and
written exam. The written test will be given September 9.

The APR designation is a symbol of professionalism and is touted as
an indication of knowledge, ethics and experience. A voluntary
certification program, it was created to unify and advance the public
relations profession. The examination is open to any one with at
least five years of paid, full-time experience in public relations or
who teaches at an accredited institution.

If you are interested in taking the APR exam or serving as the
committee co-chair, please contact Jim at jcartmell@assi-pr.com or
call him at 717-652-0100.
